"The Touch" The Lady with the Unicorn Tapestry
Cluny Museum, circa 1512.
This tapestry is one of six of a well-known series of which five are devoted to the five senses. The sixth one represents a richly-clad lady standing in front of a tent crowned by a banner on which is inscribed “À MON SEUL DÉSIR” (to my sole desire). The lady stands with one hand touching the unicorn's horn, and the other holding up the pennant. The lion sits to the side and looks on. The Lady and the Unicorn tapestries were given to Claude de Viste by Jean de Chabanne as an engagement present. The lion and the unicorn holding the coats of arms are an emblem of strength on one hand, purity on the other. These two animals symbolize the engagement of the bride & groom.
The Craye family’s weaving workshop was founded around the Year 1880 in the tapestry historic birthplace area of Flanders where it still pursues the famous tradition of master weavers in this region. Craye naturally came to specialize in the reproduction of wall tapestries by recreating the style of weaving from the 14th & 15th Centuries, but they also worked on a wide selection of adapted paintings of all times. We selected in this rich collection the most beautiful pieces which have been created, going from the Medieval period to the Art nouveau by way of the Romantic and the Impressionism.
Each tapestry is delivered lined and ready to hang up on wall. A certificate of authenticity is affixed on the back.
You will find in each tapestry the wealth of an exclusive point of weaving, and the quality of a unique knowledge, using noble materials such as wool and cotton, weaved on true original Jacquard looms.
